Skill Levels

Beginner - Intermediate: You're now aware of the different ball positions and stance widths, but you'd like to practise these setup positions regularly.
Advanced - Expert: You're already familiar with your own setup positions, but you'd like to practice them with more accuracy, to reduce your variation even further.

Stage 1 - Activations, Stretches & Dynamic Movements

Start with whatever movements you usually use to warm up for your range session before you actually start hitting any balls.

If you don't do anything and are thinking 'Maybe I should be doing something like that' - check out this 5 minute warmup routine from Mike Carrol (Fit for Golf).

Stage 2 - A Comprehensive Warmup

The goal of this stage is to work through your bag, from wedge up to driver, in order to warm up for your range session while become more familiar with your setup positions.

Step by Step

  1. Start with the wedge of your choice and setup to hit from your preferred ball position and stance width for that club.
  2. Hit 5 shots towards a target from that preferred setup position.
  3. While hitting these shots, make a mental note of the ball position within your stance. This can be done by visualising the distance, estimating of the number of inches, or whatever method makes the most sense to you.
  4. Once you are confident in that preferred ball position, move up to the next club group in your bag.
  5. Work your way from wedge, to short irons, mid irons, long irons or hybrid, then woods and finally the driver.

Note: Simply hitting from your preferred setup positions as a warm up before every range session will help you quickly become more familiar with them. This warm up routine is around 30 balls if you hit 5 balls for each of the 6 different club groups. That's a great warm up before you get into the rest of your practice.
